back in the day...

today i was just thinking about the trends of my generation.
ya know, like your parents say what the "big things" were back in the day.
i'm sure we will tell our kids about facebook.
i found this satire website and it was making fun of facebook...
saying that someday in text books it will talk about the
facebook massacre of 2009. when the layout changed and there was
uproar and uprising. no one liked it and everyone voted.
then it eventually died down and people got used to it.
but still, it made the history books.
then again, by then our kids probably won't be studying out of books.
there'll be laptops on every desk, or some other crazy technology
we can't even dream of right now.
i can also see myself saying to the kids,
"back in my day we had to actually drive the car to the gas station
and fill it up with gas. prices always rose. then fell.
and it was always in the news."
can't you see it??
i already feel like i'm behind the times in what i can do with technology,
so i can't imagine how much my children will make fun of me
for what i can't do in terms of the computer, gps, cell phone world.
even on my mac. i don't use it for 3/4ths the things it can do.
"i love technology, but not as much as you, you see" blahh. technology.

blueberries in milk

muah moment #5:
laying under the stars like old times.
the england lawn is such a happy place.
blueberries in milk.  stars.  friends.
i am happy.

wesley

today i talked to a friend i haven't talked to in
2 and a half years.  ( no letters, even )
it was weird.  but familiar.
weird because it's been so long, familiar because
everything came back so quickly:
memories, feelings, emotion, pain, joy,
excitement, disappointment, history.
we didn't reminisce.  just looked ahead.
i feel like so much time has gone by, but at the same time, none.

we talked today like we'd been best friends for years.
like we were never apart. like he had never left.
like he never got mad and i never reacted.
like he had forgotten what had been and let me be what i've grown into.
like he cared.  like he knew.  like he had changed.

amazing how two years can change you so much,
yet keep you so much the same that things can pick up
right where they left off without a second thought.
i experienced a time warp today.
is it really time for them to start coming home?

registers

muah moment #4:
counting money at the end of the day
and realizing you're dead on
especially after you made a very large mistake
the day before and were $80 short.
a little extra time and effort really does go a long way.
especially in the cash register world.

happy endings

muah moment #3:
happy endings
not gonna lie, i'm a big sucker for them.
tonight i just might have shed a few happy tears
when ryan seacrest announced that
kris allen
was the next american idol.
call me crazy for crying.
but who doesn't love a good happy ending.

a little venting never hurt anyone

time for a little venting session.
i'm in a singles ward for the summer
(in my opinion this is very different than a student ward).
the average age i'd say is 25, 26...
i've been here 3 weeks and i'm already sick of the
ridiculous fixation on marriage and dating.
EVERY WEEK in the lessons, lack of marriage or lack of boyfriend
gets brought up in class after class with a prefix:
"i know everyone is thinking this, so i'm going to be
the one to say it. . ." then onto a rant about
the hardships and trials of single life.
i am sick of generalizations that EVERYONE is thinking that.
no... not me... not jessica... not sarah with an h... not mary....
to name just a few.  i'm sure for the 30-year-old women in the ward
it truly is a hardship they think about day after day.
i'm not saying it's not a real thing to hurt about.
it's very real and painful, i'm sure.
but not all of us go to church to find an eternal companion.
not all of us enjoy attending the meet market
sunday meetings of the ysa world.
and not all of us are ready or even wanting
to get married any time soon.

the number one pull for activities:
"you might meet your future spouse there".
the number one push for home teaching:
"you might teach your future wife".
and what is this about asking the newly engaged
to give sermons from the pulpit about dating advice.
last time i checked it took them till they were 32 to find "the one"
and i didn't come to church to learn how to date
or hear any more "adorable" stories
about how during ward clean up
the love-struck couple met 3 months ago.
but most of all i didn't come to church to be told
i would meet my future husband
at a singles ward activity.
 when i was younger,
i swore i would never attend a singles ward
for this very reason.
i will find my husband in the right time in the right place,
 when we are both ready,
and when the Lord's timing is supposed to come to pass.
it's not the same for everyone and i believe it's not only inappropriate,
but extremely annoying
when couples stand at the pulpit and tell me to
"hang in there, if i can find a spouse in the singles ward, so can you."
{  vomit  }

sometimes the singles ward makes me want to
 SCREEEEEEAAAAAM
aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

green turn arrows

muah moment #2:
green turn arrows.
just when you're anticipating a tricky
left hand turn,
a glorious green turn arrow
pops up and relives you.
green turn arrows are a good friend.

cold cereal

muah moment #1:
eating rice krispies at mignight
under the stars. what could be finer, really.

muah moments

i love  the blog "1000 awesome things".
i think it is beautiful.
for the next however many posts i feel like
i want to write my own awesome things.
things in this life i like to call
muah moments.
moments when the world is a splendid place
because it's in your favor,
for however short a time.
stay tuned for muah moments to come.

p.s. go kris allen!  woot.  love.

telemarketing

today i spent 5 hours on the phone
making 150 calls to career colleges
in the name of the newly created
career college association of utah.

who knew requesting information
could be so time-consuming?!
200 more tomorrow...
i'm SO glad i'm not a telemarketer.

you will make the world

marry me

i found this courtesy of abigail.
cutest clip. . . check it out!

carpet.

when people ask 'what does your dad do for a living?'
it's hard for me to come up with a one word answer
such as doctor or lawyer.
'he's the regional sales manager for a commercial carpet company...?'
i usually reply,
only because 'he sells carpet' just sounds tacky.

growing up with a dad in the carpet business has it's ups and downs.
ups: storage shed playtime.
[pretending to be horace and jasper with parker]
carpet samples for anything imaginable:
games, car floors, tent door mats, etc.
i always feel special when the ups and fedex men
visit our house a couple times a week with packages
good carpet cleaner for discount? maybe?
he gets paid well :)

one of the downs is that wherever we go my dad has
to examine the carpet and provide commentary.
"this is milliken" he'll say.  or "ahh... lee's".
if there are bubbles in the carpet he'll step on them,
bend over, examine, push with fingers.
you get the idea.

probably my favorite is when he talks to people about their carpet.
one day in st. george we were at a swimming center.
 the carpet was bubbly.
he spent the next 20 minutes talking to the maintenance man
(that only cleans the building) about options for his carpet woes.
oh, dad.  we love you.

also he loves to talk to his "people" while we drive home from Logan.
on speaker phone.
call after call about state contracts, church square miles,
problems at the mill, whiska, backings . . .
great times in the car.
i could recognize some of his
people's voices anywhere now.

i'm willing to bet most people don't think twice
about the carpet they step on daily.
if you're in my family though, you do.
subconsciously.
it's great.

jeans, dateless

a couple weeks ago liz and i went to
the usu aggie blue carpet end of year ball.

in our jeans.
without dates.

pretty hysterical, actually.

dates all around in formals.
us in our jeans.
dates all around dancing.
us sitting.  listening.

whit played in the jazz band.
who wouldn't want to support that?

even if we were in jeans, dateless.

for the first time in my life,
i actually do feel older today than yesterday.

today she even made cafe rio salads for dinner.
sooo yummy! decorations everywhere.
all of it matched, naturally.
birthdays in our home are national holidays.

i spent today with
parker,
my best friends,
siblings,
mom and dad,
grandparents.

i like birthdays. a lot.

flashlights

with just our flashlights

we must stare
we must sing
we must run

cowboy take me away

today i saw the hannah montana movie.
it made me want to fall in love with a cowboy.

"cowboy take me away,
fly this girl as high as you can
into the wild blue.
set me free oh I pray
closer to heaven above and
closer to you closer to you. . . "
